This is the most common question asked by CA students. There has been confusions among students regarding the applicability of GMCS-1 and what is the due date to complete it. Also, whether articleship period will be extended if a students fails to undergo the GMCS-1 training within the due date.
Latest : GMCS Fee Increased
You may be aware that the present fee of Rs.5500/- for General Management and Communication Skills Course was fixed way back in 2013 and has not undergone any revision during the last four years.
Considering the above, the Council has decided to revise the fee for the course on General Management and Communication Skills (GMCS) from Rs.5500/- to Rs.7000/. The students registering for the afore stated course w.e.f. 1st February, 2017 on wards shall be required to pay the revised fee of Rs.7000/-.
“Students who registered for Articleship after 31st Dec 2014 need not undergo GMCS 1. They just need to enroll to the new Orientation program.”
Students who registered for Articleship training need to complete GMCS-1 by December 31st, 2016. If they fail to complete the training with in this period, they need to prepare for an extended articleship training.
GMCS 1 Applicability and Due Date Notification
The ICAI has decided to remove the General Management and Communication Skills (GMCS) – I Course and merge its syllabus with Orientation Programme.
Hence forthwith, it will be known as Orientation Course. Accordingly, it has been decided to conduct an Orientation Course with a duration of 15 days (90 hours) with the following features:
Students enrolling to the batches commencing from July 1, 2016 onwards would be required to undergo Orientation Course for 15 days in accordance with the new syllabus and new guidelines.
The fee for 15 days Orientation Course will be Rs.7,000/- (Rupees seven thousand only).
Students registered for practical training on or after May 1, 2012 (since the date of commencement of GMCS-I) till December 31, 2014 would be required to undergo GMCS-I uptill December 31, 2016, if not done earlier.
Rest all categories of the students who have already completed Orientation Programme (35 hours) are not required to do GMCS-I and will be deemed to have fulfilled the aforestated requirements.
GMCS-II will now be simply called GMCS and will continue to be applicable. Students need to undergo this course, before applying for Membership with the ICAI.
The aforestated decision would be made applicable for the students w.e.f. July 1, 2016.

GMCS 1 Notification Explanation:
Starting July 1st, there will be no GMCS-1. Students just need to do the Orientation Course. This Orientation Course will be for 15 days. Students who already completed their Orientation Programme need not do the GMCS-1 course now.
Students registered for Articleship after 1st Jan
All the students who have registered for Articlehsip training on or after January 1, 2015 are exempted from undergoing GMCS-I.
Students Registered for Articleship before 31st Dec 2014
The students who have registered for practical training on or after May 1, 2012 till December 31, 2014 are also required to undergo GMCS before applying for membership of the Institute.
